soooooooooo sweet! - [Solved] Black Locust
« on: May 27, 2007, 07:55:01 PM »
There are 2 of these trees in my next door neighbor's yard, down by the rock wall at the end of the property in the back.  They have been scenting the ENTIRE street with the sweetest smell - very perfumey!

Anyone know what it is?

Looks like a Black Locust tree to me.  My dad had lots of locust trees on his property.  Try this link and see what you think.

Thanks Jim!

Others have suggested a honey locust -
I'm not sure I know the difference yet, but at least we know it is a locust! ;D

Big difference between a honey locust and a black locust.  The honey locust has thorns growing out of the branches and the trunk where the black locust has pairs of thorns at the base of each leaf.  Also the pods produced by the honey locust are edible and the black locust is toxic.

From everything I have read, the black locust flowers are white and the honey locust is cream colored.
