Just started my Veggie Garden
« on: May 29, 2007, 12:53:54 PM »
After my tree fell in my yard I decided to use the area as a vegetable garden and at least make the best use of the room...Nothing would grow there ... so I dug it out added some nice top soil Loam and Planted
8 corn stocks,50 onions ,about 30 garlic, 6 habenaro, 6 super chilis, 15 japalenos, 12 bell Peppers and 12 Roma tomatoes
Its a bit crooked but you cant tell by looking at it From the street 8)

Wow! :o That is neat that you were able to turn something bad happening into a good result. Sounds like you have a salsa garden going on!

Not to be negative, but will passersby keep their grubby little paws off your veggies? You might need to set some heavy-duty traps out there to discourage them! I'd say bear traps, but I would be afraid you would get sued if you caught someone. ::) Can you imagine whoever's surprise if they reached for an ear of corn and got nipped by a mousetrap?  :D

Hmmmm...might not be a good idea, after all!

Wow, Rita!  That's going to look even better when those plants get bigger! (and the rows won't look crooked at all, by then!)  I'm guessing too, that you make your own salsa.

You wouldn't be lonesoome in jail though, cuz Dianna would be in cuffs too, for conspiracy!   (And you have proof right here, that it was her idea!)

I say just put up a sign that says NO PICKY & don't listen to our resident trouble maker!

Can't wait to see pics of this in another six weeks or so!

Now that is using your available space.  Looking good and don't worry about the crooked rows.  Let's see you can tell folks that you planned it that way.  If they were straight at some point the plants might end up shading each other and you don't want that.   ;D

Does sound like you are making some hot salsa!  :o

I saw nothing that looked like a "disclaimer"! Suggesting a bear trap & then saying "she" might get sued, then eluding to a mouse trap, doesn't release you from culpability! It was still your idea, whether it was a "good" one, or not!

You'd better hope she uses an audible motion activated yard ornament to discourage potential "pickers", instead of a device that might hurt some poor, hungry passerby!

Not really, cuz I could have "gotcha" back by fixing my typo in both our posts & made you look like you're seeing things, OR I could have deleted the 2nd part of your hijacking spree altogether... (either of which you may have expected!) but I didn't!   I happen to have a couple overactive keys on my keyboard & I thought I had taken the extra "o" off.  (In fact, I KNOW I did... I just have to remember to hit "Save" after I fix my mistakes, instead of clicking on "HOME"!)

Now maybe you should get back to work & apologize to Rita for messing up her thread, so we can get back to discussing her garden!

Rita, how do you like the idea of the audible motion activated yard ornament?  They have some really good ones now!  (Come Halloween time, watch the stores for ones that scream or moan! I'll bet you wouldn't find them in the garden department, but they'd sure be great for a front yard veggie garden!)

;D I have been thinking something like that for all types of pests ... I have seen some where that you (a catalogue I think) a motion activated sprinkler ... Though one bite off my Hot peppers would send them running anyhow :)
Keith makes hot sauce and I make the salsa .. I am going to try my hand at pickles this year as well I think I got 4 Vines of those out there ... Dianna I didn't find the lemon or lime around here (but kept forgetting to look :-[) Put can't wait to plant some seeds here and there ...

Ohhh A Racoon has moved into my Tree.. Do they eat Veggies  ???

a motion activated sprinkler

Are you talking about the Scare"crow" sprinkler, Rita? It looks a little pricey, but I bet it would work for two- and four-legged critters. Let me know if you try it and it works. We might end up having to try something else, too, besides human hair and "Irish Spring" soap in our veggie garden...

Raccoons love corn, Rita. They had a blast in our corn patch last year. Their diet consists of fruits, vegetables, acorns, earthworms, fish, and other small aquatic animals. They will even eat frogs, mice, and birds if given the chance. Sounds like a regular garbage disposal!  :D

That's a cool sprinkler, but I don't know that I'd pay that kind of money for one!

the motion light on our garage, by 2 of my rose bushes, doesn't scare the deer away... it only helps them see what they're munching on! However, before I came up with the idea of planting a deer barrier next to my veggie garden fence, I hooked up a motion light on the shed at the end of the garden & took one of the bulbs out, replacing it with one of those screw-in outlet thingies & plugged a radio in to it.... it worked!  (Gotta have the volume turned up though, & not tuned to elevator music... talk radio is best.)  We have a neighbor who lives on the other side of the back hedge, but their house sits at the other end of the lot, so I don't think they could hear it (& besides, you can set the sensor for how long you want it to stay on).  There's nothing but an open meadow for the sound to carry into on the other side of us, so there was no one else for it to bother.
Keith made me stop using it when it rained one night & threw a breaker when something activated the motion sensor.

Rita, as Dianna said, raccoons will eat almost anything! A friend of ours used to have a pet raccoon & it was really fun to watch him eat, cuz he always washed everything first. When we put a boiled egg out in his dish, he'd thoroughly wash it in his water dish, then carefully peel the shell off & wash it again before he ate it! I don't know if they eat "dirty" food or not, but I hope you don't end up donating your garden to the critter!  (If he doesn't go away, try putting a dish out for him & see if you can domesticate him! Don't forget the water dish!)

That looks awesome, Rita!! :Wow: I've never seen a tomato hedge before, but it's just terrific... you just might have started a new trend!  (And the row doesn't look crooked at all, now!)

So, where is the corn, onions, garlic & peppers that you planted? Don't tell me that the racoon snacked them all away! Did you ever see him again?

Your garden looks great!

Do you think being that close to the road will affect the flavor of the veggies?
