Cat Litter
« on: Aug 05, 2010, 02:03:43 PM »
WHat kind of cat litter do you use and why do you like it?

We use Fresh Step Clumping and I like it well enough but it seems that the wet "clumps" stick to the bottom and sides of the box, and if you don't change it daily it gets smelly.

I use a no name cat litter here, i think the brand is Our Compliments, i hate the fine stuff, it gets everywhere, but this stuff works great, and i sprinkle a little baking soda in, and no clumps, which i hate.
I also scoop out the waste daily too....and change once a week.

i use fresh step clumping w/low dust.  also i use a deeper pan than called for, i use a rubber made tote.  but i put extra in the bottom and that prevents stuff from sticking to the bottom.  it does stick to the sides some, but that is easy to get.  unlike if it is on the bottom.  and i too put baking soda in mine.

We were thinking of getting an extra cat box - I have always thought you should have 1 for each cat but Adam has disagreed.  Since the cat box is now in the house and not garage-ish area, I'm thinking he's beginning to see the value of 2 boxes.  I like the rubbermade idea - but doesn't your cat(s) tip it over?  Mine live to tip over boxes.

I also use an extra deep pan, and extra litter. And, according to cat experts you are suppose to have one more pan than you have cats, however I have one for each.

And, each prefers a different litter. One clumping, one silica, and one wood pellets. I prefer the wood pellets.

When I had cats, I tried two litter boxes and they wouldn't use the second one. Go figure.

I have 2 boxes, 4 cats. I use plain cheap clay litter. They go through so much I can't get the fancy kinds. Remember they are totally indoors.

i have had up to 3 cats, one box, but scooped everytime i walked by the box, it worked.  and i found that with the better litters, usually tidycat multiple, it worked and i didn't go through any more money to keep it smelling about the same.  less litter, but more money at the time.  and my cats at the time are totally indoor.  right now i have one totally indoor and 2 totally outdoor.  i don't let them be inside/out cats.  one or the other.

What did you do with all that poo?  For me, I'd have to scoop it and then run it upstairs, out the door, to the trash can which is about 30-40 out the back door, not exactly "convenient."

i keep a small trash can under the sink by the litter box.  i get the scented tiny garbage bags,, the ones that are about $1-2 for a roll of 100.  i put one in the can, scoop into it, tie it up, take it out.  put roll of bags/can back under sink.  take poo to outside can.  works well.

sarah, where do you get wood chips?  and do they work?

They are the pellets used in pellet stoves....about 4 bucks a bag. Meow was an exclusively outdoor cat, a stray, most of her life. She HATES "normal" litters. As the pellets get wet, they break down to sawdust. I keep a deep pile rug in front of her box to stop tracking, and when the pellets are about half gone, I pick an ornamentals bed int he back to mulch, after I'm sure I've scooped all the poo. Works for us.

The local vets here use the wood pellets for animals after surgeries...they are the only economical litter that won't clump to or dirty up wounds. I stole the idea from them. :)
