I love crab apples, too, Sheri. Wrennie sent me a crab apple seedling tree, but it died on me... :Crybaby:

Theres a baby tree that I think is an apple. She's much bigger than those teeny ones I sent you. But I'm not sure if she's attatched to the momma trees root. I'll have to dig and see. Definitely small enough to mail tho'. Do apples need really cold winters to bloom well in the spring?

Hmmm. I don't know, Wrennie. The teeny trees were fine, but I don't think I knew how to take care of them the way they needed... :dunno:

from: http://www.uri.edu/ce/factsheets/sheets/fruittreesfail.html

Most hardy fruit trees need a certain amount of cold winter weather to end their dormancy and to promote spring growth. When winters are too mild, spring growth is delayed, irregular and slow, the period of blooming is extended and the possibility of frost injury increased.

from: http://www.state.sc.us/forest/refcare.htm

Flowering and fruiting can be encouraged through pruning. Trees that bloom in spring (dogwood and flowering fruit trees) should be pruned when flowers fade. Trees that bloom in summer (crape myrtle) should be pruned during the winter.

and http://www.gardenguides.com/128654-prune-apple-trees-south-carolina.html

Also, pruning should be focused on thinning the tree to produce more fruit

We can grow some types of apples well, here. And up a little higher on the mountainside they can grow them all. It gets cold enough for the cool weather needs. But we can also grow the warm weather fruits, guava, avocados, etc. Peaches, plums and apricots do very well here too. I love my climate most of the time.

We planted 3 honeycrisp trees 3 years ago.  We have yet to have apples.  Hopefully one of these years.

Is it a matter of weather at the wrong time?

Honeycrisp are Martons most recent favorite. Apples can take 3 - 5 years before fruiting.

Tina, it is not the weather.  I don't think anyway.  When we bought them, they told us that they should fruit the next year.  Well they haven't.  We think they are just not mature enough yet.
