Fall Lettuce
« on: Sep 11, 2010, 09:42:31 AM »
I hope it's not to early to start the fall lettuce.  I couldn't resist putting something in my first row even though I haven't completely filled it with soil yet.   I figures my rationalization could be that lettuce should be planted in sucession.

I planted black seeded simpson and butter crunch and planted enough for sharon and layla too.

I might just try the same thing dug.  I'm going to use the same place I always put my lettuce and we'll see what happens.  Hopefully it will cool off a bit.

good luck with yours.  it's been really nice here this week.  But we usually get an indian summer in late September.  I'm hoping that is cool enough that the lettuce survive.

This past fall it got so hot so quickly that my lettuce bolted when it was not even 3 inches high.  I was able to harvest some early on but then it just didn't work.

:giggle: this is a bit late for me to plant fall lettuce. I have a little out there and may add some more. I love the buttercrunch.

Yes, Jenn. Potting works well. Leafy lettuces would probably do well for you all winter with repeat plantings.

OK
leaf lettuce     Part Sun     1/2 gal. pot     4 - 5 inches between plants     35 - 40 days to maturity     Several plantings, 2-week intervals

Good luck growing it on the porch.  That would be really close by for harvesting.

If Mr. Rape finishes the green house I'll try some in pots in there.  We'll all be eating salads all winter.

Somthing heavy but without toes stomped all over the row of lettuce.  Do deer like lettuce seeds?

I doubt it. But they may have been looking for something to eat anyway. Try some pie tins on a stake or a string. That seems to make them nervous enough to keep away.

do you have anything else planted close to the lettuce?  Maybe they were just passing through and stepped all over your lettuce patch.

nope nothing is planted over there at all.  But it is close to a path into the trees.  So maybe it was just a walk by.  It's hard to tell I'm not the conversant with wild animals.

I see deer prints and droppings in our garden a lot but I've not noticed that they've done much damage to any plants we have out.  The only pest I had this year was squash bugs.  Wish the deer liked to eat them.

I hope so, I'd also like to be able to return some of the hospitality from my neighbor and also share with sharon and mandy.

How's the fall lettuce Tammy?  I haven't checked mine in the last week but it wasn't doing anything before that.
