Growing Onions from seeds.
« on: Sep 19, 2010, 07:36:43 PM »
A friend gave me onion seeds to try , 2 years ago. I planted them this january.  The weather was terrible, but I did manage to get some to grow. The really good ones, was over one pound. That I never did before.
I wish to do it again in 2011.

Anyone try that?
Thanks

Most onions will only grow here in the winter. I keep saying I am going to grow them again but always end up forgetting.

I've never done it but it sounds interesting.  They sell onion "slips" here in the spring.  I've never done that either.

If Dodge can do it in Pa you should be able to in Va, Tammy. And critters avoid those.

so you planted them and then they were covered with snow for several months?  When did you get to harvest them?

okey dokey.  Makes more sense.  I think I remember when you did that.

Did you transplant to outside?  When did you harvest?

Yep
Plant them soon as the snow melts even before spring.
I just pulled mine last week.  The weather was so wet , Not all of them grew .

I order the seed online.

I might try a few just to see what happens.  We don't eat a lot of onions but I do like growing things.

You're such a nut.  No reimbursement necessary.  I won't use 1/3 of those seeds.
