Just thought I'd share my fish
« on: Jun 08, 2007, 01:26:09 PM »
While I was busy taking photos, I took pictures of the water critters too...
These koi are probably about 8 inches long... the other fish is a lionhead goldfish that survives these cold Oregon winters!!!

How are you?  I'm great!  Glad to see you! Hope we meet again!

Have you named them, Peggy?  :SmileyQmarks: Mine are named Samson and Delilah, but for all I know they are both males or both females... :laughmao:

I've  tried to name them, I can't seem to come up with a name that is as pretty as they are..
so they remain nameless...

maybe we should have a fish naming contest! lol   :laughmao:

Finally, someone started a new topic in Ponds.  I thought I was going to have to split the existing one to get some more activity in here.

maybe we should have a fish naming contest! lol   :laughmao:

An aspect of the board that hasn't been used much is the poll.  If you had some recommendations for names, that's a good way to let the members help you decide on the names.  A fish naming contest might be fun.  :applause:

Looks to me like you got lucky, & managed to get a fly in the frame, too! (Come on, now... tell the truth! Which of the creatures were you really aiming at?) :laugh1: As always, I love your pics!

How about "Bubbles" & "Chubby" for names?  Good idea that Jim had, to get a poll going!  That might be fun!

Don't do it!!! :scaredy:

Sorry - didn't mean to come barging in here, but every outdoor fish that I know of that was named, met with a very sad death!!!  I've read this on aquatic forums too, unfortunately! :-\

Your fish are very pretty! :applause:  I can't wait to put my goldfish out in the pond that Don has been slaving away on.  Hopefully in a few weeks or so... If they do well, without getting eaten by any critters, then I'll be off to the pond store to buy a few small koi fish - can't wait!

Please don't tell Samson and Delilah that, Lynne! That might cause them to have a heart attack and die... :laugh1:

Mine have been named since we have had them. They are three years old, I think, so maybe there was something in the water's ph that was bad or else a critter got to the ones that died in the posts you have read...

I can't wait to see a picture of your pond when you get it finished, Lynne! :)

That fly is living dangerously, Peggy. If he looks below, he may end up being fish food! Maybe it will save on the groceries!  :grinnnn:

A heron, oh no!!

We had a turtle visit last week. I was so worried it would eat the fish.  But the turtle is gone (probably in our well!) and the fish survive! lol.

Good luck with that heron.. I never thought of having that problem and I'm not sure what I would do about it.

Well, for what it's worth, we have two malamute/golden retriever mixes. Brother and Sister do fine staying out of the fish pond. I've seen them show interest, and I tell them to go somewhere else and be nosy and for some odd reason they actually listen!  For now! hahaha!!

lol, that was the look I just got when they got out the front door and proceeded to check out the whole neighborhood... obviously the fish are not
as important as marking the neighborhood.

I have to say that the lion head is the largest I have ever seen. In terms of girth he's every bit as big as the others.  In length, no where near. lol, he's very compact.  hahaha.

Funny, now, I have only owned these fish for two years now.  And they have grown a lot, but the previous owner said that the one you are calling grey is actually purple and because of that, it's worth a ton of money.

She's always been grey though! lol, since I have known her. They are all beautiful fish. I started out with seven of them.  One of them got caught probably by some animal.  But the rest of them were hurt when some little boys decided to take sticks to the fish and the plants.  So, I have four, and that is enough for me.

keeping that pond clean is a chore... and we bought the biggest pump that Home Depot sells.... we have a huge filter.... well, to me it's huge, and it's needing cleaned!

complain, complain!! lol....
later gater!! peg

Well, all my fish are still alive!!! I tried to take pictures the other day, but the water was cloudy and it wasn't impressive. We thought our pump broke about three weeks, and had our water turn to pea soup before we figured out that you can take the pump apart and take out the garbage and then it started right back up!

The water lettuce I got is really  multiplying, but from what I hear, it won't make it through the winter.  I  am hoping the water Hyacinth does.

I think the fish grew a lot this summer.. I swear the purple/grey one is a foot long!  I think it would feed a couple people at least for dinner! hahahaha

When the water got cloudy I did put in barley hay as recommeneded.. and it did clear up some a couple weeks later, but I am unsure if it was the barley hay or just that the pool chemistry got good.

either way, the hay messes with the pump when it starts to break down, and I doubt that I will throw in the other two bales that I bought.  Next year, I will be buying floating water plants early in the spring.  I got some underwater plants from the local creek, and they ended up clogging my pump too!!

We didn't get anymore work done to it that would make it look any nicer.  Our money this year, is basically being put into our roof and into our garden. And just fixing the odd things that come up.. leaky pipes, clogged pipes, door knobs.. lol.

Thank you for asking!!!! :) Peg

Oh i hear you there Peg....house work is never done and you save some money for somthing you really really want, and then somthing else breaks down, but spending in the garden isnt so bad huh  :grinnnn: :grinnnn:
I'm glad that you were able to get the pump going again, i hear they can be quit expensive

Soooooo  :Whis:...........have you had any fish for dinner  :laughmao: :laughmao:...or is the purple/grey one still there  :Whis:
