Papier Mache
« on: Sep 29, 2010, 09:29:01 AM »
Believe it or not somehow I missed this craft all through my school years.  And I never really thought about it.  Then I was watching the Antiques Road Show and say a sewing chest made out of papier mache.  it was so cute.  So I have embarked on a new, and hopefully cheaper than quilting, hobby.

I have wanted a correspondence secretary since I was a little kid.  I've always had a facination with stationary.  So now I'm building one.  It's going to have a big section in the bottom for all of the address label sheets.  Then it will have a level for the stationary 8x14, 8x11, 6x8 and 4x6 for notecards.  Then will come a compartment for envelopes and on that same level will come compartments for rolled stamps and books of stamps.  If there is room I'll probably add a compartment for a pen and pencil set.  I started the lowest level today.  And I added a teaspoon of vanilla to the paste to improve the smell of the paste.

So who has done this and what did you make?

What a great project.  It is not something I have ever done but it sounds like you are well on your way to making a great project.

That's usually the way I do things.  lol.  Today I put on the second layer on the bottom.  And standing just about killed my back so I stopped to take medicine.

Let see that should be around 2012.  If it weren't for slow and dead stop I wouldn't have any speeds at all.  I've done the outsides and now I need to do the insides.

sounds like you have it started and planned well.  slow and dead stop could also be called careful and resting.

sheri, it is like the top of the old fashioned roll top desks with all the drawers and cubby holes.  one for paper, one for envelopes, a small one for stamps, one for pens, and such.  but more portable.

i don't have a secretary.  just a roll top desk.  i say that like "just" but i know it isn't "just".  i was fortunate, my great-aunt had one of the old postal ones when i was a kid.  when we lived in the philippines, i was able to have one made to match the memories of that one best i could.  I didn't go a great job, but good enough.  I love my roll top desk.

I bought one of the roll tops when I lived in North Carolina.  The movers damaged the rolling part.  I got it fixed sort of but the guy didn't do a good job so when my dad said he wanted it I gave it to him.

I think it does need to be made of wood.  And that's beyond my skill set by a long shot.

I have a roll top as well... sitting at it as I type... it is perfect for me and all the junk I keep close at hand.

Well maybe I'll make a rendering if I can figure out my paint program well enough to do it.  At least that will give you an idea.
