Topic: Growing in winter

Every spring I kick myself for not starting new houseplants to give to our local library for their spring plant sale fundraiser. I don't have alot of windowspace but I'm determinedd to get some starts going this winter.
What do you grow in the winter?

What about the windows across the front of the house, or is that porch not heated??
I cant remember.

Its not well heated, and the pine trees shade them alot. Also no windowsills, those are those pocket windows.

Hmmm, looks like it will be your kitchen window, and the living room then, huh.

Yup, and the cats like the sun in the kitchen window. Maybe I'll take some cuttings to work!

That might be a better option, especially when the kitties LOVE those windows!!

You should be ok for the first few weeks anyway, if you are rooting cuttings, really no need to touch them.

Put them in a long loaf pan so you can take the plants to the water rather than the other way around. 

I have 3 epi cuttings that I could send for postage.  They are rooted at least they haven't died lol.  Let me know what you decide.

The columbine are a part shade plant and they get started outside after a chill so you wouldn't need your window sill for those.  In fact there are many winter sow plants that you could start outside now that would give you nice plants by spring.

Do these have to be houseplants?

I have some miniature tropical strawflowers that might be very nice.  You might want to look into them and see if they would be good for the sale.

How about your bathroom?  Can you set a pot on the counter or in a plant stand at a bathroom window?  I've got a pot of parsley seeds setting on a plant stand at a window in Johnny's bathroom right now.

They dont have to be houseplants, they can be anything, flowers, houseplants, veggie plants.
Whats an epi??
The 1 bathroom window that gets sun is right next to the potty. I have a jade on the tank, may be room there for a few cuttings, and it doesn't mater if I drible in the bathroom! Good idea Sheri!
I think I do have some flower seeds I could wintersow too!

Epiphyllum are epis, Like night blooming cereus and Christmas cactus.

i have a peace lily that i keep dividing to keep it small, a cast iron plant, and a snake plant aka mother in law's tongue.  i also have a rubber tree and a night blooming cereus.  those two don't get enough light but refuse to die, so keep them going i do.
