Who me?...Roses
« on: Jan 22, 2011, 12:42:58 PM »
I can't believe I'm going to try and grow roses.  But there it is, last year I got 2 minature roses and then last week I got 3 climbing peace roses for the fence on the far side of the driveway.  I hate the idea of painting the silly thing so I thought growing climbing roses over them would save me the trouble.  It's about 16 feet of fence and each one is suppose to cover about 4 feet so I'm alittle short of the complete coverage but at 3 plants for 10 dollars I figure I can go back for another 6 come payday.  That will give me nice full coverage when they are fully mature, on the street side and the driveway side.  At least that's the plan at the moment.  We'll see what unexpected bills come in to mess me up.

Those unexpected bills are a bear, Tammy.
Roses are fairly simple to grow and I think you will do well with them. Yours may take a while to actually cover that much of your fence. So be prepared.

Yikes!  They have budded out big time.  In a week, they have grown little branches 1 inch long all over themselves.  I guess they really like 60 degree weather.  Now I'm wondering if I should actually plant them in the 5 gallon bucket.  I mean if the branches are doing that what are the roots doing?

How big are the pots they are in? A gallon pot will hold them for a long time.

Are they bare root? I would definitely pot them up. Unless you get them outside within a short period of time.
Most roses do grow fast.

They are just sitting in some sawdust.  Can I plant them this time of year?  Or should I put them in pots until March or April?

Do either, Tammy. Those are bare root and need soil.

So planting them when it's still getting down into the 20's is ok?

Can you heel them into a temporary place nearer your house? Or in pots in soil close to what they will be planted in out in your garden? And back in the window or under your deck edge? I'm not sure what you have available around your house for a bit of protection.

You can plant them in their intended homes, and then protect them by mounting them with soil until the weather is a bit more steady.

I certainly didn't think this purchase through at all did I.  I don't have soil for them and I don't think I could dig anywhere in my garden other than my compost pile down to the depth necessary.  I got some pots with soil in them I guess I'll start there and keep them in the house until spring.

I will definitely enjoy them if I can keep them long enough to put them in the ground.  I'm just very worried about them dying before the ground defrosts.

it would be 3 gallons of compost one for each bush.  Not really the way I wanted to use the compost but I may not have a choice.  At least they would be planted.  I'm going to wait until the snow is gone before I do it because I want to do it outside rather than in the house.  I'm very messy.

Ok all three roses are planted and located in a sunny window.  Hopefully they will do well in the potting soil I was able to find.  I had to move some tulips that were in one pot but those are another forgiving plant so I don't expect to have a problem with that.  And when I moved the plant I found more bulbs trying to grow underneath the pot.  So it will be interesting to see what tries to come up there.  Right now I'm to hot to try anything else but I may have an ice water and then see if I can make a dent in the roses future home along the fence rail.  I can't believe it's 43 outside and it seems like 70 to me.  Now that's a hot flash.

It was a gorgeous day yesterday.  It's not so gorgeous today.  It's not cloudy like was forcast at least not yet.  But it is really cold.  Cold enough that I don't want to get out there and do anything.  Maybe later I'll feel like going out.

I've been looking at my roses and decided that I didn't do very good picking them.  Two of the three I picked have branches that are right next to one another rather than spread out.  The third one has really nice semetry.  Is there anything I can do about the other two?

When I picked them out the only thing I looked at was if they were the right kind and if I could get at them without getting punctured.

Yes, roses take well to trimming to suit your needs. Cutting now will help establish a more pleasing branch pattern.

This is the time of year to prune them here. In very cold places you can wait until the earliest spring.
Yours are indoors waiting for spring so you can trim now.
