I've not used it but read the intro screens.  Looks like you get 5GB of online storage free.  It doesn't appear to be a backup service though.  More like a place to drop your files and then be able to access them from anywhere.

After you use something like this, can you delete it?

if you use dropbox, you can use to share files that are too large to email, to have where you can get to them from any computer, or as a temporary back up. most of them have options to get up to 8 gig of free space.  you can share folders or keep them all private. you can delete files from the shared folders, or the private folders, or otherwise use it the way you would a thumb/jump drive or external hard drive.  you just have to have internet access to get to it.

i have used it a lot.  one of my former students does photo restoration and while he was in town, he scanned a bunch of old photos for me, and has done work on them, dropped them into our shared folder, where i downloaded them to my computer.  when we've finished working with them, we've deleted them.  it is a good system, as long as you are cognizant that like all computer things, a separate back up is best.

Thank you. I am going to get a new computer soon. I want to move things from this one to that one before I lose it all. I may go that route.

sounds like box and dropbox are pretty much the same.

Could you point me to an online backup that would back up programs as well as documents?

Here are several.  I don't use online backup.  Instead I have a 500G hard drive that is about the size of one of the larger smart phones and I use that.

Hey Jim, I'm using the idrive back up website that is suggested in the gizmo article.  Thank you so much for doing the research on this.  I'm determined to have good backup this time and no viruses.  At least I'm going to try.

This website advertises two types of backup.  One is scheduled and one is continuous.  Which would you suggest.  There are always things that I have to download like updates to java and windows so it's not like I can avoid the possibility of viruses.  Then there are e-mails.  I don't open attachments but I'm still so afraid.

I would use the scheduled.  The continuous would only be practical if you have an always on internet connection like DSL or Cable.  With a dial-up you will definitely want scheduled so you can make sure you computer is connected to the internet when the scheduled time is reached.
