DNS...
« on: Jun 14, 2013, 08:43:10 PM »
I am frustrated beyond belief.   :thpullhairout:  My internet just suddenly stopped working this afternoon.  I was using it and it stopped loading websites.  I've spent hours working on this and not really getting anywhere.  At one point, the troubleshooter program for the internet connection said that there was a problem with the DNS server.  My computer runs Win 7 home and is wirelessly connected to the internet and all other devices are not having a problem - just my laptop.  After flushing my dns cache, I am now able to access a FEW sites and do google searches.  I can only go here, pinterest, and facebook.  Nothing else works.  Any suggestions?  My network is working just splendid - it seems to be just the internet that isn't.  When I try to release or renew the DNS it says I can't because "media is disconnected."  If anyone has any bright ideas, I'd love to hear them.  I'm researching and working on it over here... Let's hope it is something stupid that I can fix and not a hardware issue.  I'm not even sure that this will post...   :gahh:

Sarah Loo, Jim said to unplug your wireless router for 30 seconds, plug it back in, let it acquire your DNS server, and it should work for you... :grinnnn:

He was busy playing video games, so I asked him to tell me so I could post the answer for him...

Computer family uses internet stopped working last night, on a wired network, I just went out to it and unplugged the ethernet cable from the back and waited for a bit, plugged it back in, waited for a bit, internet worked.

They get wonky sometimes.

I have tried power cycling the router several  times (and once more to be sure) and it has not helped.  I can connect with the neighbors unprotected network and surf without an issue - other than slow download speeds.  Although, I do use a cable connection - I wonder if I need to unscrew that while power cycling?

yep.  totally disconnect the box from everything.  let it sit at least 20 seconds, but if you can stand to walk away from it for a couple of minutes, that is better.  then put it back together and you should find that it fixes it right up.  i have to do that once in a while as well.

Okay, did a total disconnect left it sitting for a while (10-ish minutes) came back and am still having issues when using my router.  I re-wrote the TCP/IP as well.  Looking into some other options that the microsoft help forum suggests... This is just so much fun.  It's almost worth paying someone to fix.  I have done virus, malware, and spyware checks as well.

It's fixed!!!  I'm so excited.  I was able to re-write teh TCP/IP protocols thingies on the local area connection as well as the wireless, then messed with the DCHP settings on my router.  Did some rebooting in there a few times.  Then, I was able to flush my dns (FINALLY!!!  It hadn't worked earlier) through cmd control box.  And now, viola!  I have my computer back.  Oh happy day!!

Thank you for all the assistance!!

It's stopped working again.  Already.  I'm ticked off.   It's clearly time for me to NOT bash this computer onto the front concrete steps over and over and over again.  I should go to bed now.  Maybe it will decide to be a good machine and work properly in the morning.  It's weird how it works selectively in firefox (right now just FB and here) and not at all in chrome or IE.  Sleep well!

I can't fix anything with a computer so I can't help you.  I know my mom has trouble with her router even after having people work on it.  LOTS.

This really sounds like an issue with the internet provider.  Either their equipment or their system in general.  I think I would open a support ticket with them and see what they say.
