Do you know what this one is?

(ignore the red...it belongs to the rose next to these plants.)

I don't have any idea, but it sure is pretty! :) Are the lavender flowers part of the actual plant?

With the black bark and the purple flower bud,it looks exactly like my Datura.  Also known as Jimson Weed.

It's not datura, but the lavender flower is part of it...when the blooms open they are bell shaped.

I will try to get some more pics soon.

It's obvious that there are different kinds because the leaves on PharmerPhil's plant definitely don't match the original posted pic.  Googling images of Datura, comes up with a really close match with the original photo.  Course that don't mean that it is, but take a look and you'll see why G-Mom drew the comparison.

Now I'm confused! My Datura leaves are similar to Phil's, but my blossoms were (huge) trumpets that were essentially one "petal" & they bloomed way above the leaves.
          (9/25/2006)

Other than the leaf vein pattern & the pointy parts on the petals, Phil's blossom more resembles the short Lisianthus that I have blooming now.

So much for "varieties"! :nutz:  I'd rather have Phil's type of Datura than my white ones, but my guess is that Sarah's pic isn't of a Datura. It looks more like hers is some sort of shrub.
 (Sarah, is it a shrub?)

Karen, do you have a pic of your Datura?

Phil, does your blossom last longer than just 1 day?

Sorry Sarah... didn't mean to get so far off base! :Whis: We're... uhh... just yacking while we wait for your next pic so we can get your mystery solved!

I would say yours Patty is a Datura Wrightii.

There seems to be lots of varieties and they are different.  If you examine the link I posted closely you will see lots of similarities to the pic Sarah posted.

I did study the page from your link, & actually, I don't see any similarities in the leaves of Sarah's pic & any of the Daturas.  Datura leaves don't seem to be as "round" & they're more "meaty" than the ones appear to be in Sarah's pic.

I'm not saying that hers isn't a Datura... heaven knows there must be hundreds of varieties!  I'm just guessing that it's not one.  I'd like to see a pic of Karen's though.

Here is a picture of mine....took me a while to find it because it was buried in a ton of other pics

It's the black bark that is making me think that it's a datura.  I don't know of too many plants that have black bark.  With the many varieties of datura that there are I would think that there could be a wide difference in the leaves and still be the same basic plant.

I love all the datura flowers...

Again, so much for "varieties"! :Wow: I'm glad you found your pic, Karen. I was really confused about what you were saying about "black bark", & I even went out & checked... couldn't find anything like that on mine, except for a different shade of green, that I can't even call "brown". (Even though the pic makes the stems look brownish!)

I love the blossom on yours! How many flowers do you get from one plant? (Is that the "white one in your pic, or is it what you're calling "purple"?) Did you get that shot as it was opening?  Mine "unfolded" like that, but I didn't get any pics at that stage. How long do your blossoms last? I only got 2 blossoms (the texture was very delicate, like damp tissue paper) & they were only good for a day... & were so big & top heavy on the plant, I had to prop them up with wooden chopsticks to keep the whole thing from falling over! Your plant looks a lot "bushier" than mine... how big is it? Does it lose the leaves when it's all done? (I heard last year that someone had a whole Datura hedge, but I can't visualize that, cuz mine died back.) :ScratchHead:

I'd never seen a Datura before mine came up from seeds that Jimmy sent me, & I wasn't even sure if it would come back again this year (especially after I moved it), but it did.  I don't know what I did wrong, but I didn't have any luck with the new seeds I planted this year.

I'd be interested in trying for one like yours if you have seeds to spare this year! :grinnnn:

okay, got some more pics today...it's seed pods remind me of "chinese lantern plant" but they NEVER turn any color but what you see and crispy brown.

A good shot of the bloom fully open:

And of the whole plant:

And for size reference, the blooms are about the size of a quarter.

They do look like Jimpson Weed, it grows wild in Ohio (where I spent 10 years..yyyuuukkk!).
The wild one's are not varigated.  The seeds were used by Native American's like aspirin is used today.  There are folks out there who claim some part of the plant is smokable. I never tried it myself, couldn't tell ya.

Peggy, I don't know about "Jimpson Weed", but I found "Jimson weed (Datura stramonium") on Google Image, & the pharmacy.arizona page says...
Quote

Weedy shrub to 4 feet with stout stems and foul-smelling leaves. Leaves are large and oval with wavy edges. They are up to 6 inches long. The trumpet shaped flowers are large (6 inches) and showy, varying in color from white to purple. The fruit is a round prickly capsule to 2 inches in diameter.

Again, I'm not saying that Sarah's isn't Datura, but I think it's strange that her seed pods look like little lanterns, rather than little balls with spikes. My Tomatillo blossoms turn into little lanterns like that (Sarah's "Chinese Lantern plant")... maybe she's got a "Jimsontillo" there! :rofl1:

Don't try it, either! :critic: That stuff CAN kill you, & from what I've read about it, you won't exactly be partying on your way out!

Sarah, do you have a County Extension office there? I'm really curious as to what kind of Datura that is.

Datura ia also known as Jimson Weed, Gypsum Weed, Loco Weed, Jamestown Weed, Thorn Apple, Angel's Trumpet, Devil's Trumpet, Mad Hatter, Crazy Tea, Zombie's Cucumber & Moonflower.

I really do not feel it's a datura.  I can see why some would think it is similar, when I only see these pics. I will try again with different pics today.

I have grown (and loved) datura in the past, and this looks nothing like it. The leaves are smaller, the blooms are way smaller, even the stems are way different.

My good camera is out of commission until I get my good laptop to the doctor...this other camera just doesn't do close-ups well at all.

The seeds, when they are ripe, look much like poppy seeds.

Thank you Peggy! You got some great shots, and there is even a hose-end sprayer there for size reference.

I'm finding more of them around and in the flower bed that I planted last year, but on the bright side they are VERY easy to pull if they are in a place where I would rather not have them.
