What would you suggest?
« on: Jan 04, 2014, 12:20:01 PM »
I'd like to buy an inexpensive laptop with wifi to use at the library.  What would you suggest.  Would the chrome book be a good buy at 199.00?

Depends on what you are going to use it for.  A Chromebook differs from a traditional laptop.  It runs on the Google Chrome OS instead of Windows.  The BestBuy site has a good explanation of what a Chromebook is as related to a traditional laptop.  Here is the link:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Computing-Promotions/Chromebooks/pcmcat287400050009.c?id=pcmcat287400050009

For me personally I would want a laptop because of all the other uses.  The Chromebook is designed to be used specifically on the web and not as a "real" computer.  For the same money you can get a refurbished laptop from TigerDirect or some place like that.  Of course there are mixed opinions on buying refurbished items but just make sure if you go that route you buy from a place that will let you return with a full refund if you are not satisfied.

you can get a decent netbook (not a chromebook) that will do all the things a laptop will do, except burn or play cds/dvds, for around $200-$250 NEW.  mine cost $239 and i really, really  miss it.

And even without the burning of cd's, there are reasonable external add-ons available for that.

So far I'm happy with the chrome book.  I've added a mouse and bought a carrying case for it.  I'm not thrilled with wifi but I'm getting used to it.

I didn't want anything microsoft because I'm not interested in learning wndows 8 or really supporting microsoft at all.  Now watch you'll tell me that chrome is microsoft lol.

Love you all for putting up with me.

Glad the Chromebook is working out for you Tammy.  I agree with you completely on Windows 8 on a computer.  It was designed for a tablet and works quite well there.  Works well on phones too.

I don't like the key board but that's ok.  I'll learn to deal with it.
