Where have you kept them up until now, Sarah? I'm a little hazy on it.

They were in a smaller pen, and taken on walks/runs every day while on a leash. Very hard to convince goats that they MUST NOT jump around like mountain goats while attached to the human.  :tapfoot1: My arms are now several inches longer thanks to them.  :laughmao:

Once winter rolled around, they were also allowed to run around the whole backyard with the dogs, while there was a human present to keep them from eating things they shouldn't. During the day, they were locked in the veggie garden.

I want a goat! :laugh1:

I bet the goats are happier with more freedom, aren't they? How tall is your fence?

I looked back at the other pics earlier. So I caught the smaller pens. They will be happier with more space. Do they have shelter from the worse weather there? And doesn't this leave you with a little less growing space?
They are mighty cute though. We have some goats on a variety of mini ranches (1-5 acres mostly) around here. And llamas, alpacas and ostriches and fun stuff to see. I think they moved the buffaloes though. I haven't gone out that way to look for years.

The fence is 6' tall, overkill, but better safe than sorry.

This pen extends from the chicken house to the creek. I haven't actually planted anything in that area anyway, besides cover crops.

Right now, I have to put them into the covered pen, or put them out in the play pen, but we have plans to make a covered doorway between the two for them. I'm picturing something like a walk-thru dog house set-up, so rain and such isn't able to blow into their dry bedding.

I am wondering if 6' is even tall enough, Sarah. From the video link you pm'd me, it looks like they don't mind hopping on another's back to attain new reaches... :giggle:

Tonya, I am surprised that you don't have goats!

Wouldn't it just be, Penny!  I usually try to have someone with me when I walk, so I can take the goats, and the other person takes Abby and Izzy. We get some strange looks for sure.  :laughmao:

Thankfully, there is a long narrow stream-side park right on the other side of the church from us. It's not very popular, as there is a "nicer" park along the river two blocks over, so the girls and I usually have the park to ourselves. They really like to jump all over the picknick table there.

Great pen Sarah.  Is 6 feet high enough for them not to be able to jump over?

More than enough. They say they can jump 4' with enough motivation and a running start, but 6' would be crazy. I know my poictures haven't done a good job of acurately portraying size, but they are really small. If you look back at the third picture in post #56, Cleo is standing on a bale of straw, and is still not up to my waist.

I'll try to remember to measure them next time I'm out there. I'm betting they are around 20" tall.

The thing I have heard/seen about goats is they can climb very well. But your fence looks to be about the best you could do without putting a lid on it. I just wouldn't put anything near the 'walls' of the fence to encourage that climb thing. That is what I see around here, shelters in the middle of the goat pastures.

I like the commentary also, don't put anything by the fence they can jump onto.

Trust me, the thought has crossed my mind.

There will be nothing near any of the fences...I've been watching them bounce off things. They get pretty good distance for such squatty bodies.  :giggle:
