What herbs are you intrested in growing?
« on: Dec 21, 2008, 12:11:11 PM »
I'm working on building up my herb beds, and looking to add a few more.

Do you grow any herbs? Do you use them often? What else would you like to grow?

That's a dangerous question to ask lol.

I have sage that is doing well outside right now.
I like cinnamon basil for pork
1 like the purple ruffled basil for tomato, cheese and basil salad.
1 like thyme, rosemary, and oregano, for spaghetti sauce
1 like mint for ice water in the summer

I use the herbs fresh and dried all the time and really enjoy it.

I have a huge long list of the herbs I'd like to have but I haven't a clue where I would put them all or how I would come up with the energy to care for them all.  But it sure would be nice.

I'll put the annuals in pots later on in the winter inside the house so they get a good start on the season.

I really love rosemary, and everyone says it's so easy to grow, but it always kicks the bucket on me.

rosemary chicken or pork, yum

I also love garlic chives and that's too easy to grow

I have regular onion chives that I like in ham balls or potatoes

I have oregano, cilantro, anise and basil but seldom use them except for a few sprigs in a salad.

This is me ->?

I have mint, in a pot, that I use quite a bit.

I use loads of basil every year.

I use loads of cilantro every year.

I love rosemary, but also kill it often.

I use sage quite a bit.

I have used the thyme from my front lawn often.

I grow both calendula and borage, but have yet to use them.

I like to have parsley on hand too.  But the last seeds i got for it in a trade weren't viable.  That really hurt but it happens.  Most herb seeds only seem to stay fresh for about 1 season.

I found one type of rosemary that I could grow outside.  It has a more ground hugging shape than a regular rosemary.  It came from that company that used the white and green paper cups for their plants.  I can't remember the came of the company right now.  But if I see it again I'll definitely get it.  Like I said it's the only one I've ever had that grew for me.

here is my want list so far:

Aconite, Blue Rocket, Friar's Cap, Auld Wife's Huid or Monkshood
Alkanet
Ambrosia
Anise
Balm
Basil
Betony
Calamint
Caraway
Catnip
Centory
Chamomile
Chervil
Clary
Colchicum or Meadow Saffron
Comfrey
Coriander
Costmary
Cowslip
Cresses, Wild
Cumin
Daisy
Dill
Dittany
Elecampane
Fennel
Germander
Herb Robert
Honeysuckle
Hops
Horehound
Hyssop
Lavendar
Marigold
Marjoram
Meadow Sweet
Mint
Mugwort
Mullein
Oxlip
Parsley
Pennyroyal
Periwinkle
Pine
Poppy
Primore
Roses
Rosemary
Rue
Saffron Crocus
Southern Wood
Speedwell
Sweetbriar
Sweet Cicely
Sweet Flag
Sweet Woodruff
Tansy
Thuja
Thyme
Valerian
Red Valerian
Greek Valerian
Vervain
Violet
Viper's Bugloss
Valley Lily
Waterlily
Wild Woad
Winter Savory
Woad Waxen
Yarrow
Bay Laurel

See what I mean.  That's going to take up alot of space.

I'd love to grow more but I just don't.  I have lemon thyme that does awesome and I have been successful with my rosemary and lavender.  I try a lot of others each year with varying successes.

We are all under the same stars, therefore we are never far apart.

Burpee's has their catalog out.  I just got mine.  There are about 7 herbs I would like to get but they are packaging up 300 per package and the like and then charging almost 5 bucks just for the seeds not including shipping.  I think that's way out of my league.

That's my problem with most herbs as well...but I'm slowly building a collection. I want to focus more on it this coming garden year, as I used fresh herbs quite a bit during this last summer, and I am sure missing them now.

I would like to grow some purple basil again along with Genovese basil.  Probably will plant some mints, like spearmint around the area where the kids play--it's supposed to help repel mosquitoes.  I'm going to try to grow some Dill again (I can't seem to get it to sprout) just to attract swallowtail butterflies.  The caterpillars are so cool.  I know the kids will love seeing those!  I use a lot of parsley, so definitely some of that.  I may try a mild cilantro (if I can find it) for my salsas.  And, finally, some catnip for the cat.

I have a few of the purple ruffled basil and then some that is mixed purple and green ruffled basil.  If you are interested.  I also have the sweet basil if you need some seeds.

I was reading about other catalogs in the other string and read about Baker Creek.  I think that is where I'm going to go for my herb seeds.  That is as long as they don't gouge me on the price of shipping and handling.

Try pinetree garden seeds. They cater to smaller gardens and have good prices. -> www.superseeds.com

not all of mine are "pot" herbs.  Some are for sachels, some are for keeping bad bugs and rodents away, but they are all useful.

Sheri, I use a ton of herbs in my cooking.  I have a whole cupboard dedicated to all of my spices and they overflow into the next one.  I would love to be able to have more fresh then out of a jar.

I do use my edible herbs in cooking. I love fresh herbs.  :grinnnn: Like Triss, I have a whole cabinet full, and a drawer full of the most common ones near the stove.

During the summer I go through lots of fresh cilantro and basil, and while grilling use lots of rosemary, thyme, and sage.

Well today the parsley went in little 4 inch plastic pots.  I hope some comes up this year but if not I'll just put it on the list of herbs to buy.

I've got to say I'm like everyone else I have a spice cabinet, a kitchen shelf and 1/8 of my breakfast bar covered in herbs, spices and extracts.  It's a good thing I don't drink much tea or I'd have to do something drastic with my kitchen storage.

I find that I can't keep parsley or chives in the house.  I'm always running out.  But with the new garden I expect to be in good shape from now on.
