What have you planted?
« on: Apr 22, 2009, 04:42:22 PM »
Well, I have spent some time in my veggie garden that last few days.  I planted out nearly 50 tomatoes that I grew from seed and will be planted seeds and peppers this evening.  I have peas, radishes, green beans, and cukes to put out.  Plus I will be sprinkling in sunflower plants here and there just to give some color and bug appeal to the garden.

What do you have going?

Oh boy, you are moving.  I have 5 habanero and 2 orange-strawberry tomatoes that are doing ok inside.  I really have not done too much.  I did get a wisteria to start from seed though.

We are all under the same stars, therefore we are never far apart.

I'm late this year.  Haven't planted anything yet.  I do have the garden ready to plant but the corn patch and melon patch will need another tilling before it will be ready.  I hope to get everything planted in the next week or so.

Sounds like you are going to have a few tomatoes.  ::)

Everything got fried when I put it outside.  Crazy spring temperatures.

So I bought a six pack of banana peppers.  I haven't decided what I'm going to do about tomatoes after losing all of the special tomatoes that were sent to me.  I think I'm still in the grieving process there.  I had such high hopes.

The blue lake beans are laying on the ground.  I'm thinking of direct sowing somemore of those and see what they do.

And that's it for the veggies.

The fruit trees and bushes seem to be doing fine.

Thanks for the heads up Bestofour.  Maybe I'll actually get out there today.  It's been another busy week.

cabbage worms are eating my plants.  I've used 7 dust on them 3 times now and it's not hurting the cabbage worms at all.  I've never planted cabbage before and have never had a problem with pests in the garden.  I think Harris Teeter shredded cabbage will be just fine from now on.

Not usually, Sheri. We use, freeze, can, or give to friends, but have never had enough to sell. Hopefully this year we will be able to.

Sorry to hear about the cabbage worms. If Sevin is not doing it- I don't know what to tell you...

today I put out some tomato plants, squash plants, bell peppers (thanks to seeds from duh) and marigolds around the plants.  Oh right, planted a few patio tomatoes and sunflowers.

Boy Tonya, you guys must eat a lot!!! :laughpound:  My garden is teeny compared to yours and we eat like pigs.

:laughmao: We do eat a lot, Sheri! We can or freeze the majority of what makes it into the house, tho. We'll see how many tomatoes Mackenna lets us have this year. I thought she was gonna turn into a tomato last year! :giggle:

when my girls were small and at home we had a big garden.  It seems like I worked in that garden all the time.  I canned and froze a lot of stuff.  We had green beans all winter long.  I guess my ex got the canner in the divorce settlement. :duel:

I'm a very lazy gardener.  We've had pretty much straight rain the past 2 weeks, so I haven't put any new stuff out.  I did get everything covered in several layers of newspaper and then topped it with lots of alfalfa.  This way I don't have too ever weed the garden and it helps retain soil moisture, shades the roots (we get very hot here), and builds organic content in the soil!

Duh, I always direct sow things like sunflowers, beans, peas, and cukes -- I'm not "delicate" enough to transplant them without making their fragile roots unhappy.

I'm hoping to do a lot of canning and freezing this year.  Last year, a good deal of our excess went to the local food bank (who was hands-over-heels excited to have fresh pesticide free produce and too see 2 little girls helping out!) 'cause I canned too many pickles.

I have however planted some new perennials though, trying to get away from annuals, other then a couple hanging baskets.

It seems like I am way behind this year.  I did finally get the garden planted.  At least most of it.  I have 2 rows of okra for Aunt Bonnie, one row of peppers, about 8 rows of 3 different varieties of cow/crowder peas, 2 rows of cucumbers, and 2 rows of squash.  I ordered some tomato plants from Gardeners Choice so haven't put any of those out yet.

Also have about 25 rows of corn planted.  This year I planted Serendipity because it is supposed to be much more resistant to the corn smut that I have been having.

I hope to get my tomatoes set out this weekend.

Sounds like a new topic to me.  The weeds killed me last year!  Like Tonya we had to mow between the rows at one point.
