Wild Blackberries
« on: May 17, 2009, 07:14:37 AM »
a wild blackberry cane came up over in the blueberry bed.  So today, I took it out and planted it over where the other blackberries are.  I hope I got enough of it's tap root for it to survive.  Anyone have any information on transplanting them in case I run into more of them?

I've transplanted many wild blackberry canes with success.  No special treatment, I basically planted them and ignored them. They are very forgiving!

When the tractor came through to clear the right of way he mowed down the blackberry patch.  So if anything comes up, I'm going to plant it on the other side of the back yard.  Somewhere they will be safe lol.

I would DIE for a blackberry patch.  Blackberry jam is my utter favorite and we never can afford the $4 or $5 price tag slapped onto each tiny jar.  I'm envious, Tammy!

Can't you find them growing wild all over the place Sarah?  I will have to make you some this year if not cuz we have them all over the place here.

We have Marijuana growing all over the place here - and sand plums but definitely not blackberries.

And I am quite sure that Triss makes killer jam/jelly!!

We have a whole section of woods full of blackberries.  I got out and pick quite a bit but can never get all of them.  It takes a lot to make anything and I get stuck with so many of the darn thorns.  I like to do it though.

In a while you will be able to send Tristen out to do that instead of you, Jess.

He goes out there and picks but he eats them all as he is picking them.  He comes back with purple fingers and lips.

I would, too, Jessica. I love blackberries... :licklips:

I used to go pick wild blackberries as a child. I got where I didn't like doing it after I nearly picked up a snake... :cringe:

I got stung by a wasp picking last summer.  At first I thought it was a thorn until it started throbbing.

Maybe you could send all of us some marijuana and we won't care if we have blackberries or not.  We probably won't know if we have blackberries or not.

I have a bunch of blackberry plants too but it does take a lot, like Jessica says, to make anything.  I make cobblers some times.

Triss, how about posting how to make the jam.

Sheri, I usually just follow the recipe on the pack of pectin.  I do not have any pectin here right now so I cannot post the recipe but it is typically a mix of the berries and sugar all cooked together with some lemon juice and then a pack of pectin. I may mix up fruits like strawberry rhubarb or add a peach to the blackberries to give it a hint of another flavor but I get the general guidelines from the box.

Thanks Triss.  I used to make freezer strawberry jam but I've forgotten how to do that too.  It was the best jam ever.

I don't have a blackberry patch yet.  But I figure if I put them all together in a few years I should have a respectable patch.

It's great that you have the thornless ones.  Me I have to work with what God has provided.  I never have enough money to go around.  I think transplanting them in the fall will work much better.  What I transplanted in the spring died on me.  A lot of work to have it all go to waste.
