I pulled up 2 more squash plants yesterday.  Bugs.  They must love the heat and dry weather.

If I can make myself do it or should I say NOT do it I'm not planting a vegetable garden next year.  I'm going to plant winter rye as a cover crop this fall and let it grow and take a year off.  I may plant a few tomatoes in big pots and maybe a cuke or 2 in 2 pots and run them up a trellis.  No tilling, no weeding, no worry.

And if I can get the squirrel population down to a dull roar I would love to plant edibles again.

The potatoes did really well this year but I dug up an entire row, or at least hope I did, last night.  The top plants have died back so much I got concerned I'd never find the potatoes.  I've got to get the other row today.

Way back when we had a garden, I could never manage to dig up the taters without chopping them in half so they gave me other things to pick/harvest. lol
Dear Lord, On this day, please wrap your arm around my shoulder and keep your hand over my mouth.  Amen

The picture of the squirrels is posted around here somewhere.  But I don't remember procisely where.

I think your suppose to use a pitch fork to gently probe for the potatoes.

Penny, my squash is done.  I pulled up 4 plants due to squash bugs and now it's so hot and dry the others have stopped producing flowers and I'm going to pull them up too.  We got a lot and were able to eat and give away but usually we produce into August.  The green beans have finally started producing.  We had some for dinner yesterday.  We will eat the last of the potatoes tonight.  I lonly planted 2 very short rows and we've eaten them 6 or 7 times so I'm happy with that.  I'd like to plant more but we don't  have a good place to keep them unless I put the under the house and I don't like that plan.  I'm going to think about that for next year.  The tomatoes are doing great.  They seem to like the dry weather.  Lots and lots of very sweeet cucumbers.  They taste the best ever.

I'm not sure how to start peas next year.  Do you just start them in big pots with a trellis?

How about you Penny.  Is your stuff coming in?

I am still about 2 weeks or so, off of being able to pick some tomatoes, the peppers are coming in now, so i will pick as needed, and freeze some, the rest will go for canning.

My cucumbers are small, but doing well, i have those growing in a pot (first time), and i am impressed with them, same with the melons that are in a pot as well.

My peas are about done, and yes,  thats exactly what i do, start them in pots, but i do start them indoors a couple of weeks ahead of planting, just to give them a head start, but i did however start a Fall crop, first time for that, so we shall see.

The beans are still growing strong, so i am at the point where i will start freezing them now.

You start your peas in pots indoors and then plant them in the ground outside?  Or do you keep them in pots?  What size pots is you do?

I, personally, am 100% against the planting of peas.  I thought it was important to let YOU know where I stand on the important issues.

So whats the deal with peas :ScratchHead: :giggle:......sounds like a story here??

Thats exactly what i do Sheri, is put them in a big pot, with a trellis, and let them go, and that way, they dont over take the garden

Evidentially Sarah Otto doesn't like peas.  I was thinking she's probably crazy and now I know it for sure.

Penny, sorry to continue to pick your brain but what size pots do you use?  The tallest one of my pitiful pea plants got this time was about 12 inches.  I either waited too late and the heat killed them or the ground isn't right for pea production.

I'm thinking I can probably plant them pretty early and keep them against the wall on my screened in porch unless I ask Mr. Rape to finish my greenhouse.  Have I mentioned I love Mr. Rape.
