Book Review Corner Vol. 3
« on: Jul 22, 2010, 09:40:33 AM »
I got the kitchen remodel book that you recommended.  I can really see why you liked it.  I'm going to be taking a lot of notes.

I also read "Diving into the Wreck", by Kristine Kathryn Rusch.  I loved it.  Very Sci-Fi and very well written.  I plan to try and find the rest of her books and read them.

I also found "Foundation", by Mercedes Lackey.  I hadn't read that one before so I'm reading it now and enjoying it like I do all of the books that she writes on her own.  I'm not so fond of the ones she writes with her husband.  No offense meant.

Tammy, I had to go back and look to see who had recommended the kitchen remodel book.  That's our next project.

I'm still reading Edgar Sawtelle.  It was last months library book club book, I read part of it didn't like it so I stopped and ended up not being able to attend the book club, then I got an email that they sat and chatted about other stuff so it will be discussed this month.  I rechecked it out and am trying to get through it.  Everyone else loves so I'm looking for the good parts.

I don't often follow the main stream so I wish you lots of luck with the book.

I'm glad you liked the book, Tammy.

I checked out a cooking book called "Don't Panic, More Dinners in the Freezer." It's by Martinez, Howell, and Garcia.  Seems to be a GOOD book for freezer meals - not just the normal, thick, hearty, artery clogging, cheese and cream of _ soup mixes.

Okay, I take it all back after flipping through the book.  It has got some WONDERFUL sounding meals in them.  I mean, really good sounding stuff.  This book (and the first one, same title just without the 'more') is going on my christmas list.

I am going to have to put those books on hold.  I have too many hold right now though.

I need to look into some new authors.

Here is the list I'm currently thinking of for after the appraisal.

Carl Hiaasen
John Lutz
Stuart M. Kaminsky
Gary Alan Ruse
Edward D. Hoch
Jon L. Breen
Barry Jones
Michael Gilbert
Dorothy B. Hughes
Peter Lovesey
Lillian de la Torre

Has anyone read any of these?  Were they good?  What titles?  ...inquiring minds want to know.  I've read short stories by them and thought they were good.

None of those authors look familiar to me.

I don't think I've read any of their stuff.  The only John Lutz I can think of was on Saturday Night Live.

Well Carl Hiaasen is well stocked at my library.  I checked out 3 of them.  One I have finished.  All are well written.  But you can definitely tell it is a guy writting.  Does that sound to feminist?  It's just that Skinny Dip reminded me so much of Clive Cussler.  There is a definite "Bimbo" aspect to his female characters in my opinion.  If any one else gives him a try let me know what you think.

Today I am picking up a book by Dorothy B. Hughes.  I'm looking forward to this one.  Her Sherlock Holmes story was so sweet.  I hope I'm not disappointed.

Well I've got my nose in the Dorothy B. Hughes.  I'm not thrilled yet.

Have you ever read the Madman and the Professor?  I was told by several people it is the greatest book of all times, practically.  Not so in my mind.

I put down Dorothy's book in favor of two new arcane society books one written under the amanda quick non de plum and one under Jayne Kratz.  I'm enjoying them.  I always do like her books.  I'm glad she is a prolific writer.

I checked out Frozen Assets: Cook for a day, eat for a month and it was a colossal waste of time and energy.  Stupid, stupid book.  Ridiculously dumbed-down and what few recipes there are, are like how to make and freeze sandwiches, cookies, and spaghetti sauce.

If they have the Women's Day Cookbook in your library try that one. In the back they have several cook ahead meals. You are a good enough cook to pick and choose between them but it is good for proportions. How many pounds of onions to how much GB, etc.

Here are the books I have read lately....

Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks - excellent book!
True Colors by Kristin Hannah - great book!
Summer Island by Kristin Hannah - it was good but was a slow start

And now I am reading Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah.  So far so good but I just started it last night.

I guess I am on a Kristin Hannah kick. :giggle:  I had never read any of her books and then my friend told me how great they were so I read True Colors.  I liked it so much I decided to read more of hers.  I have some others waiting to be read too (and they are not Kristin Hannah :giggle:)

My book club just finished Lunch at the Picadilly by Clyde Edgerton.  It's ok for a light, easy read but nothing I'll ever read again.

I have not heard of that one, Sheri.  How often does your book club get together?

I finished up Chasing Orion by Kathryn Lasky... it was one of Lys' books but I was out... it was well written.  Also finished up a couple of Susan Mallory books in the last couple of weeks and am reading The Griffin Mage by Rachel Neumeier right now.

I will have to add Kristin Hannah to my lists as they are low right now.  The last author you suggested was really good Jessica though I cannot remember the name now and I read all of her book as well.

I've never even heard of it.  Who is it by?

Simon Winchester The Professor and the Madman: A Tale of Murder, Insanity, and the Making of The Oxford English Dictionary

sounds good but I didn't love it.  I won't say don't read it but I won't read it again, even for a book club.

But I did very much like The Housekeeper and the Professor by Yoko Ogawa.

These professors get around.

I love to read, always have and always find time for it... though I am one of those people who read quickly just for fun and promptly forget what I have read.
