Thanks everyone.  The pattern with the ripples has sure become my favorite.

Somehow I missed the snuggle project stuff -- what a great idea!  I think it would make an awesome girl scout project also.  Can you hear the gears turning??   :grinnnn:

The PTA made scarves for the teacher's this year and were left with quite a bit of extra yarn.  Lori, our PTA president gave it to me knowing I love to crochet and since there was so much of it I decided to make some projects for the PTA.  My first two are afghans.  They look pretty much the same except on one I started with black and the other with orange.  I flipped the edges over the chair so you can see the difference.

I still have almost 2 lbs of each yarn left and will be making scarves for the PTA to sell.

Are those school colors, Triss? Eye-popping afghans. And a good job done.

I have very fond memories of those kinds of afghans with the waves in it at my grandmother's house as a child and at my uncle's cabin.

No I don't.  My Uncle had a cabin up by Estes Park, CO and I remember laying on his super-ugly lime green with orange pine-cone velour couch and staring out at chipmunks playing on the deck.  When the chipmunks ran off, I would stare at the blanket on the back of the couch -- bring orange, green, brown, and cream striped, and wonder how they got the "corners" in the blanket.  I think I was always sent to the couch as punishment though... :giggle:

That is such a beautiful area.  I remember going there as a kiddo.

I started on a new project, put away the orange and black for a while.  This one is for my parents so I need to have it done in the next 3 weeks since that is when I head out.  I have already gone through 2 skeins of yarn and it is looking so nice.  I am using a different stitch from any I have done an afghan with so it will be interesting to see how it turns out.

Oh I will once it is done.

No I have not heard of that one.  I just looked it up and WOW is that a beautiful stitch.  I am going to have to try that one out.

For this one I am using a cluster stitch.  It looks like this square only I am doing it on a larger scale with the full afghan.

That was a test piece, though the afghan is a shade of green very similar to that one only with some flecks of color throughout it.

Triss, do you have a pattern for this?  It is a crochet stitch?   I love it and would like to try that ..

I just finished another afghan like the one I posted earlier, for my last son that just got married .  I forgot to take a picture of it before I gave it to him, but I used a variegated yarn with blues and browns and then solid colors in between and ran the stripes down instead of across.

It is basically single crochet one way and then double the other way with a chain between each cluster.  A cluster is 3 double crochets that are not fully finished and joined together.  I cannot explain well so here is the instructions for the block and then the stitch.  Hope that helps.

The original pattern came from Lion Brand yarn's crochet along.  This tells how to make the block.

Cluster Stitch Ch 26.
Row 1 (RS) Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across - 25 sc.
Row 2 Ch 2, turn (counts as first dc), CL in next sc; *ch 1, skip 1 sc, CL in next sc; rep from * to last dc, dc in last sc.
Row 3 Ch 1, turn. Sc in first dc and in each CL and ch1-space across to t-ch; sc in top of t-ch. Rep (Rows 2 and 3) 8 times more. Fasten off.

And this is the pattern I found online for the cluster stitch itself.

Step1
Take the yarn over the hook, or yarn over (yo) in crocheting terms. Insert the hook into the next stitch (st) to your left. Remember you always crochet to your left unless otherwise stated in your instructions.
Step2
Yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over again. You now have three loops on your hook. Pull through the first two on the hook.
Step3
Yarn over and insert the hook into the next stitch in the row.
Step4
Yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over yet again. You should now have four loops on your hook. Pull through the first two. The result is two double crochets that are almost complete.
Step5
Yarn over and insert the hook into the next stitch.
Step6
Yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through the first two loops on your hook again. This leaves you with three double crochets that are almost complete.
Step7
Yarn over and pull through all four remaining loops on the hook. This completes a 3 doubles cluster stitch.

So I would like some advice.  I would like to start on a new afghan as I am almost out of yarn for the one I am working on for my mom and Dan bought me 4 new skeins of yarn.  The thing is he bought 2 skeins each of scarlett and kelly green in the Vanna's Choice line.  I would like to do an afghan with large blocks of color in stripes about 10 inches wide each I think.  I want to use the colors I have to start but add in 2-3 more colors to make it bold, bright and colorful.  Having trouble deciding on which additional colors to use.  This link shows all of the colors.  Which should I add?

I am planning on starting with the scarlett today, then adding the kelly green next.

l would do blue and yellow. That is primary colors plus green. With Black to make them pop. Sounds 60's neon to me.

Thank you Triss for the above directions.

The afghan I just made, I used the Vanna yarn too, and I got 4-5 inch sections per skein, my stripes as I worked ran across, but the finished afghan, the stripes ran up and down.  It's nice yarn to work with, softer than what I usually use and less on each skein then what I am use to.

Since I am a warm person, these are the colors I would use for an afghan along with your Scarlett and Kelly Green.

Mustard
Rust
Honey

I copied all the jpgs and put them together in a folder and I liked them, but the real test is to put them all together in the store and see, it's hard to tell on the computer.
